Japan will extend an additional $60 million in financial and humanitarian aid to the Palestinian Authority following the weekend election to choose a new Palestinian leader, officials said Monday.
This will bring the total amount of Japan's assistance to the Palestinian Authority in fiscal 2004 to about $90 million, more than double that for fiscal 2003 and matching the previous record set in fiscal 1996, the officials said.
Mahmoud Abbas, chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization, declared victory in Sunday's election to choose a successor to late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
