The government will give every household in Japan a manual covering evacuation procedures for missile and terrorist attacks, government sources said Sunday.

The manual, to be distributed by the end of fiscal 2007, will include first aid instructions and a list of emergency contacts, the sources said.

It will be completed by the national government after local governments compile plans on public protection by the end of fiscal 2006, in line with a public protection law, the sources said.

The government decided to distribute the manual, containing some 50 pages, in hopes of a smooth evacuation should such a step ever be needed, they said.

The publication will also include evacuation guidelines for major earthquakes and other natural disasters, according to the sources.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency has dispatched senior officials to Singapore, which has already compiled a similar document, the sources said.

The agency is also examining an evacuation manual from Israel, which came under Iraqi missile attack during the 1991 Gulf War, they said.
