Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) said Friday that it will conditionally allow handicapped people to use scooter-type electric wheelchairs at its train stations.
JR Tokai President Masayuki Matsumoto announced the plan at a Tokyo news conference.
Earlier this month, the Justice Ministry recommended that the Nagoya-based railway operator allow such wheelchairs to be used on its premises, saying the company's policies constituted a "serious violation of human rights."
In accordance with the spirit of that recommendation, Matsumoto said JR Tokai will consider allowing scooter-type electric wheelchairs to be used, but only in stations where it was "possible."
Scooter-type wheelchairs resemble tricycles.
