The government Tuesday granted renewable one-year temporary resident status to a 13-year-old Thai girl orphaned in Thailand and now living in Japan with her adoptive guardians.
Justice Minister Chieko Noono told a news conference that immigration officials would soon inform Mevisa Yoshida of her extended stay in Japan.
Her current residence status, which expired Oct. 6, falls under "designated activities," which allows someone to stay in Japan for a specific reason and is issued on the assumption that the person will eventually leave the country.
