A distraught cancer patient at a Tokyo hospital stabbed two fellow patients to death Monday morning and seriously wounded an assistant nurse before being subdued, police said.

Mitsuru Asami, 59, was arrested after the stabbing spree in the third-floor room at Shirahigebashi Hospital in Sumida Ward at about 9:25 a.m. The resident of Sumida Ward used a kitchen knife with a 20-cm-long blade, police said.

The two fatalities were identified as Saburo Higano, 86, and Yoshinori Nonaka, 75, both from Tokyo, who had been sharing the same hospital room as the suspect.
