Toshiba Elevator and Building Systems Corp. said Thursday it has installed the world's fastest passenger elevator in the world's tallest building, located in Taipei.
The Guinness Book of Records has certified the elevator's record-breaking specifications, the firm said.
The elevator, installed in the Taipei 101 office building, ascends at a speed of 1,010 meters per minute, or 60.6 kph, according to the latest edition of Guinness.
Toshiba Elevator and Building Systems, a Toshiba Corp. arm, has installed two such elevators in the 508-meter-high Taipei 101.
Taipei 101 is the world's tallest habitable building, eclipsing the 452-meter Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. It is called Taipei 101 because it has 101 floors above ground.
The Guinness Book Records also certified that the elevator has a passenger capacity of 24 and load capacity of 1,600 kg. When descending, it runs at a speed of 600 meters per minute.
Toshiba Elevator and Building Systems applied new technology to adjust the atmospheric pressure inside the elevators using suction and discharge blowers, sparing passengers from ear-popping sensations.
The elevator also features vibration control technology.
