A 10-year-old Iraqi boy whose left eye was badly injured during a military clash successfully underwent a second eye operation Tuesday at a hospital in suburban Tokyo, according to his doctors.

Mohamad Haytham Saleh's distorted cornea was replaced and he also received an artificial crystal lens, professor Tetsuo Hida, the boy's attending physician, told reporters after the one-hour operation at Kyorin University Hospital in Mitaka.

"Although I am not sure to what extent he will regain his eyesight, he is now able to wear a contact lens," Hida said.

The boy is scheduled to be discharged from the hospital within seven to 10 days and will continue to receive treatment there and at another hospital in Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture, where he was initially treated.
