Mitsubishi Motors Corp. plans to offer a 10-year, 100,000-km warranty for its vehicles in a bid to boost business, sources said Friday.
The deal compares with an average warranty of three years and 60,000 km offered by other Japanese carmakers.
MMC, struggling with a sharp decline in sales due to the defect coverup scandals in which it has been embroiled, wants to alleviate any concerns that buyers may have, the sources said.
During the warranty period, MMC will repair the engine and other major parts for free, but will charge for changing minor and consumable parts, they said.
The move will also benefit its dealers because they can expect certain revenues from changing minor and consumable parts, they added.
MMC in October debuted the Colt Plus small wagon, its first new model in about 17 months. It has been selling well, but the automaker is not in a position to release additional new models soon, the sources said.
The company hopes the new system will boost vehicle sales, and also promote the image that MMC is on a drive to improve quality, they said.
