The National Police Agency has asked the Japanese Bankers Association and 12 other financial bodies to promote the use of cash and credit cards with integrated circuit chips to stem growing forgery, a Cabinet minister said Tuesday.
Yoshitaka Murata, chairman of the National Public Safety Commission, made the disclosure at a news conference.
The NPA also asked the Regional Banks Association of Japan, the National Association of Shinkin Banks and the Japan Credit Card Association.
It wants the 13 to promote biometrics technology in transactions to curb fraudulent card use, Murata said.
Biometrics involves confirming user identities by electronically examining individual characteristics, including fingerprints and vein patterns.
