Tokyo Gas Co. said Monday it will put what it says is the world's first commercial residential polymer electrolyte fuel cell cogeneration system on the market, although on a limited scale, on Feb. 8.

Developed jointly with Ebara Ballard Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., the system has a power generation efficiency of more than 31 percent and a heat recovery efficiency of more than 40 percent, Tokyo Gas said.

The system is capable of generating 1 kw of electricity and has a hot water tank capacity of 200 liters.

An environment-friendly cogeneration system generates electricity and produces heat that can be used to supply hot water and air conditioning.
