The Democratic Party of Japan will file a criminal accusation against former Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto for allegedly falsifying his faction's annual political funds reports, a DPJ official said Thursday.
The latest charge by the largest opposition force is centered on a 2 billion yen carry-over that his faction continued to declare in its funds reports in recent years but actually did not exist.
The DPJ's move against Hashimoto comes amid a scandal over his faction's failure to report a 100 million yen donation from the Japan Dental Association. It was widely reported that he took personal receipt of the check at a Tokyo restaurant, but he has denied any recollection of this.
