The government will set specific emissions targets for six greenhouse gases as the Kyoto Protocol on climate change takes effect in February, government sources said Tuesday.

It has decided to review current emission targets, which are roughly divided into several groups, and create specific targets for carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane and three types of alternatives for chlorofluorocarbon, the sources said.

The 1997 protocol requires signatories to regulate those gases.

As for five types of gases other than carbon dioxide, the government aims to reduce them by a combined 30 million tons between 2008 and 2012.

The government will also introduce a new system to accurately measure emissions by entities, including households and companies as well as public-sector offices, by comparing their predictions with the actual emissions.
