Ten fans of popular South Korean actor Bae Yong Joon, who has rocketed to fame in Japan for his leading role in the hit South Korean TV drama "Winter Sonata," were injured Friday while jostling at the Tokyo hotel where he was staying, police said.

The incident took place around 12:30 p.m. at the Hotel New Otani in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, when women hoping to get a glimpse of the 32-year-old Bae ended up jostling with each other, police said.

The 10 women were treated at a hospital for bruises, sprains and other light injuries, they said.

Bae, known affectionately in Japan as "Yon-sama," said he hoped the fans did not sustain serious injuries.

The incident caused organizers to cancel or tighten security for some of Bae's engagements on the day, a Japanese management agency said.

Bae arrived Thursday afternoon at Narita International Airport, where he received a tumultuous welcome from an estimated 3,500 people, mostly women, some of whom had stayed the previous night just to ensure they would have a vantage point.
