Tokyo department store sales in October fell a preliminary 2.8 percent from a year earlier to 161.71 billion yen, marking the eighth monthly decline in a row, the Japan Department Stores Association said Monday.
The association attributed the fall mainly to sluggish sales of autumn and winter clothing, which were affected by two strong typhoons in the reporting month.
The report, covering 27 department stores in Tokyo run by 13 companies, also blamed continuing weakness in corporate demand.
