The Athens Olympic Games are likely to create 885.7 billion yen worth of demand in the Japanese economy by inducing purchases of such goods and services as digital flat-panel TVs, Dentsu Inc. said Friday.
An official of the Center for Consumer Studies, a Dentsu division, said Olympics-related demand will likely receive a boost from the ongoing shopping boom for digital household electronics appliances.
The Athens Olympics, which runs between Aug. 13 and Aug. 29, is likely to push up consumption by 407.2 billion yen by stimulating demand for such goods as DVD recorders, digital TVs and other digital gadgets, the center said. It could also cause spending related to preliminary contests in Japan to select Olympic team members, it said.
Of the figure, the electronics industry will likely enjoy additional demand worth 298 billion yen, while outlays associated with Japan's preliminary elimination rounds will likely come to 44.6 billion yen.
By industrial sector, manufacturers will benefit most, seeing an estimated 449.1 billion yen in demand, it said.
The center said it computed the estimates from an Internet survey of 300 consumers and hearings with the industries likely to benefit from the Athens Games.
