Charles Robert Jenkins, the alleged U.S. Army deserter and husband of a repatriated abductee, told Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi he wants a clear guarantee from the United States that he won't be court-martialed if he comes to Japan, government sources said Sunday.

Jenkins, 64, met with Koizumi for an hour at a state guesthouse in a Pyongyang suburb Saturday after the prime minister wrapped up his summit with Kim Jong Il.

Jenkins, married to former abductee Hitomi Soga, refused to come to Japan even though Koizumi said he promised "maximum efforts" to ensure that he would be able to live with his wife in Japan.
