The ruling coalition agreed Wednesday to propose legislation that would allow people who are more than two years in arrears on their mandatory pension premiums to catch up on payments so they don't lose their pension eligibility.
Under the National Pension Law, the government loses its claim to unpaid national pension premiums that are not collected within two years. The measure is being considered amid public furor over Diet members' failure to pay into the National Pension System.
Within the first three years of the new law taking effect, people who have not joined or paid premiums into the national pension system for more than two years would be able to pay up as far back as April 1986. After the three-year amnesty expires, people will be only able to cover arrears extending back a maximum of five years.
