The current account surplus rose to a record 17.27 trillion yen in fiscal 2003, up 29 percent from the previous year, the Finance Ministry said Monday.
The increase was due to brisk exports to China and other Asian economies, as well as to smaller deficits in services trade, the ministry said.
The previous high was 15.19 trillion yen, recorded in fiscal 1998.
