Almost 70 percent of respondents to a Kyodo News poll do not want the Diet to pass a set of pension reform bills during the current legislative session, following revelations that many lawmakers have failed to join the national pension system or pay premiums.
A total of 67.7 percent said the bills should not be passed, while 22.7 percent said they should be passed, the poll showed. The bills are being deliberated in the House of Councilors after passing the House of Representatives.
Among those who answered the nationwide survey Saturday and Sunday, 78.9 percent said they want all Diet members to disclose their payment status of mandatory national pension dues, compared with 17.6 percent who do not think it necessary.
