Debt-ridden Daiei Inc. has begun adapting its stores to suit the needs of local shoppers.

The supermarket chain is being reconstructed under a three-year plan with the help of lenders and the government-affiliated Development Bank of Japan.

The struggling company's head office created a corner for locally grown vegetables near the entrance of its store in Tsurugashima, Saitama Prefecture, and expanded the food floor by 10 percent to give shoppers more space.
