Airports, bullet trains and highways were packed with vacationers Saturday as the Golden Week holiday period shifted into high gear.

Tokyo's Haneda airport and Narita airport in Chiba Prefecture saw long lines of travelers subjected to heightened security checks carried out under an antiterror drive, such as X-ray checks conducted on passengers' shoes.

Almost all domestic flights departing from Haneda were full from the morning, while the majority of reserved seats on bullet trains departing from Tokyo on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line were sold out, railway and airline officials said.
