Chiba University's advanced surgery department is conducting a procedure billed as the ultimate treatment for obesity, in which the size of the patient's stomach is drastically reduced.

About 60 obese people who have failed to lose weight through dieting or medication and have suffered complications such as lifestyle-related illnesses, including diabetes, have undergone the surgery, and most have successfully lost weight, surgeons said.

The surgery is aimed at individuals whose weight is two times greater than standard, or more than 45 kg above standard, and who have shown no medical benefits after more than three years of treatment.
