Waseda University on Tuesday conferred its honorary doctorate of laws on Joseph Stiglitz, a Columbia University professor who won the 2001 Nobel economics prize.

The university praised the U.S. economist for his "broad and flexible thinking and policy recommendations for all classes of people that contribute to research and development of Waseda University."

Stiglitz is the 84th distinguished person to be awarded the degree.

In the mid-1990s, he chaired the Council of Economic Advisers to then U.S. President Bill Clinton, and later served as chief economist at the World Bank.
