Mitsubishi Electric Corp. said Wednesday it will enter Japan's growing DVD recorder market in May.

The electronics maker said it will release four models May 21, including three with a built-in hard disk drive. A model with a built-in VCR will be released June 21.

A Mitsubishi spokesman said the company aims to capture a 10 percent share of the domestic market, and does not plan to launch the models overseas.

The move is the latest in a series of corporate campaigns to capitalize on a surge in demand for digital consumer products in the lead up to the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Mitsubishi expects the domestic DVD recorder market to expand to 3.5 million units in fiscal 2004, from an estimated 2 million units the previous year.
