Matsuya Foods Co. said Tuesday it will reintroduce "gyudon" beef-on-rice dishes at its restaurants Wednesday as part of a campaign that will run until the end of March.

The decision to sell a limited number of gyudon dishes at its restaurants nationwide was triggered by requests from consumers, with the company having yanked gyudon off its menus last month.

Matsuya and other gyudon chains were forced to stop serving their mainline item due to Japan's ban on U.S. beef imports. These firms rely almost entirely on U.S. beef for their products.

Matsuya, which operates the nation's second-largest gyudon chain, said it has secured 300 tons of U.S., Japanese and Australian beef.

Gyudon will be sold at all of Matsuya's approximately 600 outlets during the period in question -- though each outlet will stop serving the dish after its daily allocation of beef runs out.

Orders for large bowls of gyudon will not be accepted, while a regular-size bowl will be sold for 390 yen.
