The man charged with hijacking an All Nippon Airways jumbo jet and stabbing its pilot to death in July 1999 was not fully sane at the time, according to the latest psychiatric evaluation, sources said.

The evaluation of Yuji Nishizawa, 33, was ordered by prosecutors, but the results, which have been submitted to the Tokyo District Court, may work to their disadvantage. It was the second mental test on Nishizawa since his trial began, the sources said.

The examination was conducted by Hideo Hosaki, a professor emeritus at Keio University, from June to December. He concluded that Nishizawa's ability to distinguish right from wrong was "weakened significantly at the time of the crime, but I cannot say he lost it completely."
