Japan said Friday it will ask South Korea to be more vigilant about possible attacks against Japanese nationals in the country following a recent assault there.
On Thursday, a 6-year-old Japanese boy was assaulted by an ax-wielding South Korean man at a school in Seoul. The boy suffered a fractured skull.
"We have to call for the full attention of the South Korean government" to prevent similar incidents, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda told a news conference.
He said that Tokyo will examine whether there was adequate protection at the elementary school for Japanese children.
The kindergarten has two guards on duty.
