Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and Resona Holdings Inc. said some of their automated teller machines malfunctioned Monday.

Resona said some account holders at three banks under the Resona group -- Resona Bank, Saitama Resona Bank and Nara Bank -- could not withdraw cash or check their bank balance at ATMs run by other banks.

Resona said the system had returned to normal by Monday night, adding that it aims to settle the day's transactions by sending data to other banks on Tuesday morning.

BTM reported similar problems. Some of its account holders could not use their banking cards at non-BTM ATMs. BTM bank machines also would not accept cards issued by other banks.

A BTM spokesman said the bank is looking into the cause of the problem, including an integrated ATM center jointly operated by major banks.

Resona also reported computer malfunctions at some of its branches.
