The United States failed Friday to persuade Japan to lift its import ban on U.S. beef during bilateral talks in Tokyo.
U.S. delegates said they would try to reopen talks in February to lift the ban, in place since the discovery in December of a case of mad cow disease in a Canadian-born cow in Washington state.
Although the U.S. delegates did not offer new safety measures, they indicated they might make an offer at the next meeting.
