Toyota Motor Corp. is for the first time the most popular place to work among male university students majoring in science and engineering, according to results of a 2003 survey released Wednesday.
Toyota, which ranked second the previous year, took over the top spot from Sony Corp., which held first place for 15 years since 1989, employment data company Diamond-big and lead Co. said. Sony ranked third in the latest survey.
NTT DoCoMo Inc. jumped to second from 18th, while NTT Data Corp. ranked fourth and NTT Communications Corp. seventh, according to the company, which provides job information to students.
Among male students majoring in the humanities, trading houses Mitsubishi Corp. and Mitsui & Co., along with the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, were the top three, the same as last year. Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. surged to sixth from 42nd and Toyota rose to eighth from 16th, the company said.
The survey indicates that students are more likely to select a company rather than an industry in which to work, it said.
All Nippon Airways Co. ranked first among female students majoring in the humanities, while Suntory Ltd. ranked first among female students with science and engineering majors.
The survey was conducted in November and December. It obtained answers from 2,717 students at universities and graduate schools who are seeking jobs.
