The Defense Agency is planning to take comprehensive mental health measures for Self-Defense Forces troops who are dispatched to Iraq to help them deal with possible psychological problems such as posttraumatic stress disorder, agency sources said Saturday.
The agency will give training to help SDF members cope with the anxiety of terrorist attacks and also set up a system to support those who develop symptoms of PTSD, the sources said.
"Being in proximity to death, there may be cases where members suffer both physically and mentally," said an agency official. "We regard mental care as very important as this is something that directly affects morale."
