Communication among the government, businesses and public is key to restoring public confidence in nuclear power -- which has been tainted by accidents and scandals -- according to a government report released Friday.
In the White Paper on Nuclear Energy, the Cabinet Office's Atomic Energy Commission urges the government and the private sector to "promote broad-based public hearings aimed at deepening mutual understanding" with the public to facilitate nuclear power policies.
The white paper used to be published annually after it was first issued in 1957. The latest edition was put on hold for five years, however, due largely to serious incidents during the period that fueled safety concerns.
