NHK and five private television stations said Wednesday they have agreed to promote the construction of the world's tallest broadcasting tower, envisioned at about 600 meters.
The stations said the tower would be used to promote terrestrial digital broadcasting, which was inaugurated Dec. 1 in some parts of the Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya areas.
The 333-meter Tokyo Tower has served as a comprehensive broadcasting tower for TV and radio stations since its launch in 1958.
Among the world's tallest towers, the CN Tower in Toronto is 553 meters high, while the Ostankino Tower in Moscow climbs 540 meters into the sky.
