The Tokyo High Court said Tuesday it will conduct psychiatric tests on Takeshi Abe, the former vice president of Teikyo University who stands accused of killing a hemophiliac through the use of HIV-tainted coagulants.
The tests will determine whether Abe, 87, can continue to stand trial.
The Criminal Procedure Law stipulates that a trial must be suspended when a defendant is not in a sound state of mind.
