Core private-sector machinery orders rose a seasonally adjusted 17.4 percent in October, hitting 1.022 trillion yen, the government said Tuesday.
This is well above an average market projection of a 5.1 percent rise from September.
It is also the first time machinery orders have topped 1 trillion yen since August 2001, the Cabinet Office said in a preliminary report.
