The Liberal Democratic Party captured only 43.9 percent of the valid votes in Sunday's election for the House of Representatives but emerged with 56 percent of the 300 single-seat district seats, according to an analysis of the results.
The main opposition Democratic Party of Japan, on the other hand, got 36.7 percent of the votes for the single-seat constituencies but won only 35 percent of the seats.
The results confirm the theory that the single-seat district system, introduced in the 1996 election, favors the bigger political parties.
