Domestic shipments of mobile phones rose 20.6 percent in September from a year earlier to 4.129 million units, up for the 11th consecutive month.

Shipments of mobile phones, excluding personal handy-phone system (PHS) handsets, rose 19.7 percent to 4.007 million units, up for the 12th straight month, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association said Tuesday.

It attributed the rise to the unabated popularity of handsets with camera functions.

Shipments of PHS phones alone soared 64.3 percent to 121,000 units for the seventh straight monthly increase, reflecting robust demand for units designed for data transmission, it said.
