Toshiba Corp. said Monday it has developed an active camera system that can detect and track fast-moving objects in ambient lighting conditions, such as those in home and office environments.
The new system marks a significant improvement from the existing model, which typically requires a strong light source to capture the image sequences of moving objects at a high frame rate, Toshiba said.
The company expects the new system to be applied in areas such as robots and intelligent video cameras for both industrial and home use, including tracking balls in sporting contests.
The development of a highly sensitive visual sensor and technological advances in the tracking algorithm have made it possible for the machine to follow an object moving at a speed of 100 kph some 15 meters away from the camera, Toshiba said.
