Sumitomo Pharmaceuticals Co., a subsidiary of Sumitomo Chemical Co., said Monday it has secured Chinese government authorization to market an anxiety drug in China.

The serotonin agonist sold in Japan under the name Sediel can ease anxiety or depression, with the risk of dizziness as a side effect almost nil, the company said.

Marketing permission was granted by China's State Food and Drug Administration.

The company expects the drug to help Chinese people cope with stress amid the country's modernization, it said.
