Japan, South Korea and the United States will hold a sub-Cabinet level meeting regarding the North Korean nuclear standoff on Jun. 12 and 13 in Honolulu, the Foreign Ministry said Monday.
Mitoji Yabunaka, chief of the Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau; James Kelly, deputy U.S. assistant secretary of state; and Lee Soo Hyuck, South Korean deputy foreign minister will attend the trilateral coordination and oversight group meeting.
The meeting will come after South Korean President Roh Moo Hyun visits Japan to meet with Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Friday. On the Honolulu talks, bilateral meetings will be held on the first day while the three-way meeting will take place on the second day, ministry sources said.
Senior officials of the three countries are expected to discuss how to respond to North Korean proposals made in a meeting in April with the U.S. and China. Pyongyang reportedly offered to abandon its nuclear development program if Washington promises not to attack it in a written statement.
