NHK said Wednesday it remained in the black in the year to March 31 for the 13th straight fiscal year, with operating revenues exceeding expenses by 10.2 billion yen.
Operating revenues for fiscal 2002 came to 664.7 billion yen, while expenses totaled 654.5 billion yen, the public broadcast company said.
Of the revenues, income stemming from subscribers' fees amounted to 642.5 billion yen, down 6.1 billion yen from the initially budgeted figure, it said.
Among expenditures, NHK was saddled with a 1 billion yen bill for programs related to the war in Iraq, while it booked an expense of 1.6 billion yen for programs related to the World Cup soccer finals.
But overall spending was down 6.8 billion yen from its initial budget.
NHK will use 8.3 billion yen of the 10.2 billion yen surplus to pay off a part of its liabilities and set aside the remaining sum as retained earnings to stabilize its finances, it said.
The financial results were reported to Toranosuke Katayama, minister of public management, home affairs, posts and telecommunications.
