Kobe Steel Ltd. and its subsidiary, Shinko Pantec Co., said Wednesday they have agreed to combine Kobe Steel's environmental business into Shinko Pantec on Oct. 1.

The move, originally announced March 18, had been scheduled for January 2004. It will help consolidate the management resources of the environmental businesses of the two firms into one unit and further strengthen the Kobe group's comprehensive environmental solutions business, the two firms said in a news release.

Under the agreement, Shinko Pantec will be the continuing entity and be renamed Kobelco Eco-Solutions Co. It will become the Kobe group's core firm for the environmental business, they said.

The two companies have operated their environmental businesses separately and each have specialized fields.

Kobe Steel's environmental business is centered on waste water treatment, including sludge incineration and municipal solid waste incineration. Shinko Pantec has experience in water and sewage treatment, industrial waste water treatment and ultrapure water generation equipment.
