Fast Retailing Co., known for its Uniqlo brand of casual clothing, opened on Wednesday its first food outlet.
FR Foods Co. opened the store in the second basement floor of Matsuya Co.'s outlet in Tokyo's Ginza district. It had been selling its Skip brand foods exclusively to membership customers since October.
About 74,000 people have bought foods from the company under the membership system. Among the mainstay goods are vegetables and fruit grown with minimal use of fertilizers and water.
"We opened this store in Ginza for the convenience of customers," FR Foods President Osamu Yunoki said. "We would like to expand our business aggressively by opening five to six stores this year, mainly in the Tokyo metropolitan area."
The company plans to concentrate operations near train stations.
