Nikon Corp. said Monday it fell deeper into the red with a consolidated net loss of 8.14 billion yen in fiscal 2002, against a loss of 6 billion yen the previous year.

The maker of cameras and semiconductor-manufacturing equipment mainly attributed the loss to a 33.1 percent drop, to 133.11 billion yen, in sales of steppers and other precision instruments as a result of the stagnant market for semiconductor-related products.

On a pretax basis, Nikon registered a loss of 6.74 billion yen after a logging a profit of 12.21 billion yen the previous year. Group sales decreased 2.9 percent to 468.96 billion yen.
