Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. said Tuesday it will begin to draw up plans this fiscal year to create a greenbelt of about 50 sq. km in the Saudi Arabian desert beside the Red Sea.

"The aim is to achieve sustainable greening of the desert by re-creating water and greenery in the desert," the Japanese heavy machinery maker said in a press release.

The company said it will begin constructing a demonstration plant with a Saudi Arabian government affiliate within three years after finalizing the plan during the fiscal year.

There are countries in Southeast Asia and Europe, including China, that have expressed interest in the research, making it likely that the plan will develop into a multilateral project, the company added.
