The Foreign Ministry on Tuesday issued a broader warning calling on Japanese to exercise caution in traveling to additional areas of China due to the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome.

The latest travel advisory does not apply to Beijing, Guangdong and Shanxi provinces, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and areas within 100 km of the border with Afghanistan. Those areas are already covered by previous travel advisories, which remain in effect, the ministry said.

As of Tuesday, the ministry had not issued any travel advisory to areas of China that were relatively unaffected by SARS or the turmoil in the aftermath of the U.S.-led attack on terrorist targets in Afghanistan.
