A wildfire burned from Friday night into Saturday morning near the Wada pass in Hachioji in western Tokyo. The blaze destroyed 34,300 sq. meters of shrubs and grassland, police and firefighters said.

A local fire department resumed firefighting efforts at 5 a.m. after suspending work at midnight. The fire started around 9 p.m. Friday.

A fire department helicopter had seen clouds of smoke but did not report seeing flames, they said. No injuries were reported. Authorities initially said the fire had burned 53,300 sq. meters of grassland but revised the figure downward in the morning.

According to police officials, the fire broke out in the vicinity of Jimba highway in the Hachioji town of Kamiongata near the town of Fujino, Kanagawa Prefecture.
