Sony Corp. is recalling some of its Vaio personal computers due to a defect that may cause an adhesive agent in the power supply unit to melt, company officials said Friday.

Subject to the recall are 20,000 units of three Vaio desktop computers -- the PCV-RZ50, RZ60 and RZ70P -- which were sold between September and January, the officials said. Sony will repair the defective models free of charge.

The officials said the melting adhesive agent creates a strange smell, gives off smoke and can cause sparks. They denied that the computer could catch fire.

Affected models may not boot up, while others may shut down while in use, they said.

On Wednesday, Sony sent out a recall of some of its Cyber-shot digital cameras due to battery problems.
