A glitch caused Yahoo Japan Corp.'s online payment service to be off-line for about 16 hours beginning Sunday evening, a company official said Tuesday.
Several thousand people are believed to have been unable to register or make online purchases using the Yahoo Wallet service between 10 p.m. Sunday and 2 p.m. Monday.
Yahoo Japan has not released any details, saying only that a system-related problem and human error caused the problem.
Newly registered personal information has been lost due to a server-related problem, Yahoo Japan said, adding it received inquiries from people who had entered credit card numbers.
"Personal information has not seeped out," the official said.
Users of Yahoo Wallet normally need to enter their personal information only once, when they first sign up for the service. But users who registered around the time of the glitch will have to re-enter their information, the company said.
