Reuters Group PLC has appointed Yuji Takei as president of Reuters Japan Ltd., the local arm of the London-based global news organization said Thursday.

Takei, 45, is the first Japanese national to hold the position in Reuters' 130-year presence in Japan, Reuters Japan said in a news release.

Takei is responsible for Reuters business in Japan and reports to Marc Duale, managing director of Reuters Asia Pte. Duale had been acting as Reuters Japan president since September.

"With a professional and committed staff in Japan, we aim to focus on our business priorities . . . and gain market share," Takei said in a statement. He joined Reuters Japan in 1985 and became vice president in January 1999.
